Spin to pick a random US state
All 50 states are on the wheel. Spin and it lands on one at random, with every state getting the same chance. Use the lists above the entries to change what’s on the wheel:
- All 50 states
- 50 states + DC, which adds the District of Columbia
- Northeast, Midwest, South or West, the four regions used by the US Census Bureau
You can also edit the list directly. Remove the states you’ve already been to, or add territories like Puerto Rico and Guam.
Ideas for a random state generator
Road trips. Narrow the wheel to the region you can drive to and spin for your next weekend trip. Or spin once a year for a big vacation and plan around wherever it lands.
School projects. Give every student a random state for a report or a state fair. Choose Remove from wheel after each pick so no two students get the same one.
Geography quizzes. Spin a state, then name its capital, find it on a map, or name the states it borders.
The 50 states challenge. Working toward visiting every state? Put the ones you haven’t seen on the wheel and let it pick the next one.
Food and culture night. Spin a state and cook its signature dish: Maine lobster rolls, Texas brisket, New Mexico green chile, or Wisconsin cheese curds.
Games. Use the wheel for license plate games on long drives, or as a category in trivia night.
The four regions
| Region | States | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast | 9 | New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts |
| Midwest | 12 | Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota |
| South | 16 | Texas, Florida, Georgia, Virginia |
| West | 13 | California, Washington, Colorado, Arizona |
These are the official Census Bureau regions. People often think of the region names differently, so if your game or class uses another split, edit the list to match.
Fair results every spin
Every state has the same chance on every spin. The result is chosen by your browser’s secure random number generator before the wheel turns, and every pick is saved in the Results tab.
