Spin for a number from 1 to 25

Twenty-five slices, each with a 4% chance. It’s a common class size, the number of days in an advent calendar, and the number of squares on a five by five grid.

A shuffled advent calendar

Most advent calendars count from December 1 to 25. Shake it up: each day, spin and open the door with that number. Choose Remove from wheel after each spin so a door can’t come up twice. Your wheel is saved in your browser, so it picks up where you left off the next day, on the same device.

Tip: Doing a 25-day activity calendar for kids? Write 25 small activities on a list, number them, and let the wheel choose one each day.

Classroom picks

  • Call on students: number your class list and spin for who answers. Remove numbers as you go so everyone has a turn.
  • Reading groups: spin for which student reads next.
  • Homework check: spin for which question to go over together.
  • Line leader: spin for today’s line leader and door holder.

Grid games

  • Bingo cards: a classic bingo card has 25 squares. Number your homemade card and spin to mark one.
  • Battleship-style games: number a 5 by 5 board and spin for a square to target.
  • Art challenge: split a drawing into 25 squares and spin for which one to color next.

Fair every time

Each spin is picked by your browser’s cryptographic random number generator before the wheel moves. Every number gets the same slice. For a bigger class, try 1 to 30.

Questions people ask

How do I open advent calendar doors in a random order?

Spin each day and choose Remove from wheel. The number is the door to open. Because removed numbers stay off the wheel, every door gets opened exactly once by the 25th. The wheel remembers what's been removed on the same device.

What are the odds of each number?

Each number from 1 to 25 has a one in twenty-five chance, which is 4%.

Can I use it for a 5 by 5 grid game?

Yes. Number the squares 1 to 25, row by row. Spin for a square, and remove it once it's been played.
