A random number from 1 to 4

Spin and get a 1, 2, 3 or 4. Every number has the same 25% chance. Four is a handy number: four players at a table, four teams in a class, four quarters in a game.

Ways to use a 1 to 4 spinner

  • Four players: pick who starts in a four-player board game or card game.
  • Four teams: choose which team answers the next quiz question.
  • Game quarters: pick which quarter a challenge or bet applies to.
  • Four seasons: spin for a season to draw, write about or plan a trip around.
  • Multiple choice: practice tests with answers A to D? Let 1 to 4 stand in for A to D when you need a random guess.

Use it as a d4

Tabletop role-playing games use a four-sided die, the little pyramid called a d4, for things like small weapons and minor spells. It’s also the easiest die to lose. Spin this wheel for each d4 you’d roll. Need 2d4? Spin twice and add the numbers.

Tip: Rolling the same die again and again? Set the spin time to 2 or 3 seconds in Settings so you aren’t waiting on the wheel.

Four even groups

Asking everyone to spin works for casual groups, but the groups won’t always come out even. To split a class or a team into four groups of the same size, paste the names into the random team generator and choose four teams.

Fair and simple

The number is chosen first, using your browser’s secure random number generator, and the wheel is animated to land on it. Each spin is independent, so a 4 is just as likely after a 4 as after anything else.

Questions people ask

Can this replace a d4?

Yes. A four-sided die gives 1, 2, 3 or 4 with equal odds, and so does this wheel. Spin once for each d4 you would roll and add them up.

What are the odds of each number?

Each number has a one in four chance, which is 25%, on every spin.

How do I split people into four groups?

For a quick split, have each person spin and join the group with their number. For groups that come out the same size, use the random team generator, which deals everyone out evenly.
